A miniature Turing test, disguised as a puzzle.
Most word puzzles test vocabulary. Cryptic crosswords test something deeper, the same abilities that separate fluent speakers from true thinkers.
Every cryptic clue has exactly three components. Learn to spot each one and the clue snaps open like a lock.
Words implying movement, disorder, or change signal an anagram. Rearrange the fodder letters to form the answer.
Harvest the initial letter of each word in the fodder. The number of words matches the number of letters in the answer.
Assemble abbreviations, chemical symbols, Roman numerals, or homophones side by side. With, and, joins are common indicators or sometimes no indicator at all.
The answer is physically concealed in consecutive letters spanning word boundaries, ignoring spaces. Scan the raw letters until it reveals itself.
Letters are cut from the head, tail, or heart of a word. Each position has its own signal word.
No indicator, no fodder just two separate definitions pointing at the same word. The absence of a wordplay indicator is the signal. Usually a very short clue.
Setters draw on a shared vocabulary of conventions. Recognise these on sight and the clue structure snaps into focus immediately.
Every crossword tackled is a step towards sharper thinking. Have fun! 'Stay hungry. Stay foolish!' - Steve Jobs
